About O”Reilly’s Rainforest Guesthouse

The O’Reilly family pioneered ecotourism in Australia when they began showing visitors around the park in 1915. Their’s is a classic case of ecotourism enabling a local landholder to find a sustainable alternative to farming in an area of great environmental significance.
Three generations of O’Reilly family members O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat has been a family owned and operated business since first opening in 1926. After devoting over 40 years to the business, the second generation family members retired in the late 1990’s, and so charged the third generation with the responsibility of carrying on the business into the new millennium.
Two of Big Peter and Karma’s children, Shane and Tim currently work at the guesthouse while Peter Jr maintains a place on the Board. Vince and Lona’s children, Greg and Jane, are involved with the day-to-day management of the guesthouse, while Catherine, Bernadette and Tom can also be seen working casually from time to time on the mountain. Michael, (or Big Mick to us), is a cousin to Peter and Vince, and also assists in the Activities Department part-time at the Guesthouse.

More recently O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat has been awarded Advanced Accreditation under the internationally acclaimed Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation Program (NEAP).
